Why a different approach is needed
Many women are refused loans not because they cannot repay, but because they cannot prove it in the way banks usually ask. Most products expect regular salaries, bank statements and property to offer as security.
What WDB plans to consider
According to WDB's stakeholder briefing, the bank plans to use everyday information to judge whether a borrower can repay:
- Mobile money history
- Buying and selling patterns
- Utility bill payments
- Ghana Card details
- Membership of savings or business groups
Social collateral
Where needed, guarantees from fellow group members and endorsements from market leaders may take the place of physical security.
Every application will still be assessed, and approval is not guaranteed. Read more on the how it works page.
