How it works
A different way to judge a good borrower
Many women are refused loans not because they cannot repay, but because they cannot prove it in the way banks usually ask. WDB plans to change what counts as proof, and to bring its services closer to where women work.
This describes WDB's intended approach
WDB has not yet opened. The methods and channels on this page are planned and may change before launch.
Accessible credit assessment
Using everyday information
Instead of relying only on bank statements and land titles, WDB plans to consider information that women in business already generate through their daily work.
- 01
Mobile money transaction history
A record of money coming in and going out can show how a business trades over time.
- 02
Buying and selling patterns
Regular purchases of stock and steady sales show an active, working business.
- 03
Utility bill payments
Paying bills consistently is evidence of reliability.
- 04
Ghana Card details
Used to confirm identity.
- 05
Savings groups and business associations
Membership of a savings group or business association shows commitment and standing in the community.
Alternative assessment widens the evidence WDB can consider. It does not remove lending requirements, and it does not guarantee that a loan will be approved.
Social collateral
Trust that already exists in markets and communities
Many women do not own land or property to offer as security. Where appropriate, WDB plans to accept social collateral in place of physical security.
Social collateral may be used where needed and where appropriate. It will be considered alongside WDB's other lending requirements.
Peer guarantees
Fellow members of a group may guarantee one another's loans.
Endorsements from market leaders
Respected market leaders may vouch for traders they know.
Multiple access channels
Several ways to reach WDB
WDB's priority is to be easy and reliable to reach. It plans to offer several routes, so that women can choose what suits them.
- 01
WDB branches and community agents
Branches, supported by WDB agents based in local communities and markets.
- 02
Door-to-door registration and support
Agents are planned to visit women where they work to register them and provide ongoing support.
- 03
Mobile application
Planned self-registration and access through a WDB mobile app.
- 04
USSD for basic phones
A short code is planned so that services can be reached on any phone, with no internet needed. The code will be announced by WDB.
- 05
Partner institutions and local access points
WDB agents are planned for Ghana Enterprises Agency centres and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
